A PICTURE BOOK BY BILL PEET

The Wump World

The peaceful, grass-grazing Wumps are driven underground when the Pollutians arrive from the planet Pollutus and pave their green world into a smog-choked metropolis, in Bill Peet's pointed fable about pollution and renewal.

OPENING LINES

"One morning the Wumps were awakened by a far-off humming sound... Zooming straight for the earth came a great flock of potbellied monsters, with tails and fins, spitting fire and shooting out streaks of black smoke."

WHY HE WROTE IT: IN THE FAMILY'S WORDS

This was the second of Bill Peet's books designed to raise awareness of environmental problems, following Farewell to Shady Glade in 1966. On the original family site, his son noted that a year after The Wump World was published, Dr. Seuss's The Lorax appeared, with interesting parallels to both of Bill's environmental books. He also observed that the capybara from Capyboppy had some influence on the design of the Wumps.
