A PICTURE BOOK BY BILL PEET

Jennifer and Josephine

A worn-out old touring car named Jennifer and her friend, a scrawny stray cat named Josephine, are bought by a reckless new owner and must survive a harrowing journey down a treacherous mountain road.

OPENING LINES

"Jennifer was already an old automobile way back in the year 1933. The old touring car had traveled over a hundred thousand miles and been sold or traded so many times she couldn't remember all the owners. Now at last she was worn out and sold for scrap iron and left sitting in the far corner of a car junkyard."

WHY HE WROTE IT: IN THE FAMILY'S WORDS

On the original family site, his son noted that his father had nostalgia for many of the things common during his childhood. "In addition to steam locomotives, wild places, and circuses, he loved early automobiles." (Bill Peet, Jr.)
